Components for a Cause (C4C)

Components for a cause is a US program that recycles new or gently-used prosthetic components to be used in our permanent clinical operations in Guatemala and Ecuador to treat patients. Following our organizational core values, "Human dignity, Empowerment, Community, and Sustainability," we kindly ask you to make a quick quality check on your components and check if they are suitable for another person to use.

How C4C works:

Take a Tour of Our Warehouse:

When donating in-kind goods to a 501(c)(3) foundation in Colorado and the United States, there are specific guidelines and requirements to ensure you receive the appropriate tax deductions.

Valuation of the Donation: The donor must determine the fair market value of the donated item. For items valued under $5,000, no formal appraisal is required. However, items valued over $5,000 necessitate an appraisal from a qualified appraiser.

Receipt from the Foundation: The foundation must provide a written acknowledgment that includes a detailed description of the donated item but does not specify its value. This acknowledgment is crucial for claiming the deduction on your tax return.

Form 8283: If the value of the donation exceeds $500, the donor must complete IRS Form 8283 and attach it to their tax return. Donations over $5,000 require the signature of the appraiser and the foundation on this form.

Tax Deduction: Donors can deduct the fair market value of the donated item on their federal income tax return, subject to certain limitations based on a percentage of their adjusted gross income. These limitations can vary depending on the type of item donated.

Record keeping and Documentation: Donors should keep detailed records and all documentation related to the donation. This includes the acknowledgment from the charity and any appraisal documents, as they are essential for supporting the deduction in the event of an audit.

Consulting a tax advisor or accountant is recommended to ensure compliance with all requirements and to maximize the tax benefits of your donation.
